Cameroon international Soccer Legend Rigobert Song Is Dead

Former Cameroon international Rigobert Song was flown from Cameroon to France for further treatment after coming out of a two-day coma. He was admitted to Yaounde Central Hospital on Sunday after falling unconscious.

On Tuesday he waved to fans outside the Yaounde Emergency Centre as he was taken away to the airport.

Yaounde Emergency Centre director Dr. Louis Joss Bitang A Mafok said Song had suffered a "cerebral hemorrhage".

Cameroon Health Minister Andre Mama Fouda offered his support: "Song has departed to Pitie Salpetriere hospital in Paris, where he will continue treatment. I am grateful to the Head of State for instructing the government to take the necessary measures to ensure that Song recovers.’’

"We hail the professionalism of medical doctors in Cameroon and we continue to pray for a safe trip for Rigobert Song and that he should recover very fast," he added.

On Tuesday, Dr. Mafok confirmed Song had "come out of his coma and the oxygen has been disconnected", adding "his high blood pressure has returned to normal and the cerebral haemorrhage has been controlled".



In a career spanning from 1993 to 2010, Song represented Cameroon 137 times. He enjoyed spells in England with Liverpool and West Ham, and ended his career with Turkish club Trabzonspor.

Former Cameroon team-mate Samuel Eto'o tweeted in French: "I wish you courage and a speedy recovery big brother."




Ex-Liverpool players Jamie Carragher, Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler have also sent messages of support, while Liverpool club tweeted: "Our thoughts are with Rigobert Song and his family at this time."

Veteran Cameroonian legend, Rigobert Song has been named as coach of the locally based Indomitable Lions team .

Rigobert Song replaces Martin Ndtoungou Mpile who led the side during the recent 2016 CAF African Championships tournament (Chan) in Rwanda.

Song who was the ex-skipper of the team was unveiled as the new coach on Thursday during a press conference which also saw the new coach of the senior team, Hugo Broos, being announced.

It is announced that Song will maintain the same back room staff with Ernest Agbor taking the assistant coaching role while Simon Nlend remains the goalkeeper coach and Narcisse Tinkeu retaining his role in the team.

The Indomitable Lions made it to the quarterfinals of Chan losing to Cote d'Ivoire, conceding all three goals in extra time. Song is expected to bring a lot of his playing experience into his new role at the helm of this side as they prepare for Chan 2018 in Kenya.  The 40 year old footballer retired from active football in 2011 and has been working as TV pundit until he

was confirmed as the head coach of Chad on Monday 26 October and now head coach for the lions.

He played for the Indomitable Lions between 1993 and 2010 winning two African Nations’ Cup titles with the team. He featured for Liverpool, Galatasaray, West Ham United and Metz among other clubs during his playing career.

Song, remains the most experienced player in the history of Cameroonian football with 137 appearances including his appearances in four FIFA World Cups in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010. The ex-West ham, Trabzonspor and Liverpool defender also featured at the eighth Africa Cup of Nations where he still holds the record of 35 consecutive first team games.

Song also won two Afcon titles with the Indomitable Lions in 2000 after beating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties and in 2002 they defeated Senegal 3-2 on penalties.
